The SZCG's President's Message

January 2012
Please remember that the majority of the work at the South Zone Community Gardens
is done by volunteers just like you. These people give up their free time to help make
the garden run successfully.
I had hoped I would not have to repeat myself but Mother Nature has left me no
choice. We were hit harder this year than last with two major floods. We pumped in
April for 4 days using two pumps. Then we were hit again in June and pumped 2 full
days and all night one night.
Just to put this into perspective – the cost of pumping in 2011 would pay for more than
three years of water usage for the whole community garden area. If only we could
store all this water and use it when we need it.
The garden executive has been very fortunate to have one of our own work with us on
a flood reduction proposal. We are in the process of working with the multiple land
owners to get approval to proceed with the proposal. Once we have approval we will
need to do a lot of fund raising to pay for the work. We will keep you posted on fund
raising events.
Continue to keep an eye on the bulletin board located at the entrance to the parking
area and your e-mail, for updates on events we plan to hold for the 2012 growing
season. We will continue to send out volunteer requests on a regular basis for the
work that needs to be done throughout the year. The first event will be putting up the
posts and strings early in the spring. A group effort will make this and every job much
more enjoyable and quicker to complete.
If you have any questions, concerns or issues relating to the community gardens or
an individual garden plot, you can contact one of the Directors of the South Zone
Community Garden Association by calling phone message line at 565-1312 or by
sending an email to szcg@szcomgardens.com. Gardeners are to leave a message
and the appropriate Director will respond to the message. Do not direct concerns to
the Wascana Center Authority or to its personnel.
The Directors of the South Zone Community Gardens Association have an agreement
with Wascana Centre Authority. The agreement allows WCA the right of access to the
Community Gardens and the right to fulfill its obligations to maintain the property in
and around the Community Gardens. This maintenance may involve the application of
herbicides and pesticides after consultation with the Directors.
As stated above this facility operates on the many hours of work provided by those
who volunteers. This work includes things like: checking the plots throughout the
garden season, replace stakes, install strings in spring and removing them in mid
season, put out and take in water hoses, fixing water taps, fix and maintain all the
equipment, mow and trim grass. As you can see there is a lot of work to be done so if
you can help in any way, please let us know. We welcome all volunteers. Contact via
phone – 565-1312 or by e-mail @ szcg@szcomgardens.com. You can also visit our

Historical Reports:
January 2011
Greetings and welcome to all 2011 new and returning gardeners – lets hope for a dryer year!
The Community Gardens is one of the programs that are part of the South Zone Recreation Board.
The Gardens are located near the corner of Wascana Parkway & Grant Road. In 2011 we will have
313 garden plots available at this location. The Community Gardens program is financially self-
sufficient and operates from the garden user fees. However the gardens could not operate without
the many hours of contribution by many volunteers who organize and/or provide all the services for
the gardeners, throughout the season.
Last year we had two sessions of heavy rain which left the gardens flooded. We were able to have
the gardens pumped after the second heavy rain fall. However the rain did not let up and the
gardens remained too wet for Wascana Centre Authority to do their fall tilling. We will be working
with WCA to have the garden plots tilled in the spring. This will be dependant on Mother Nature and
what she has to offer this spring. We also have a committee working on some ideas to prevent
future flooding.
Please keep an eye on the bulletin board located at the entrance to the parking area and your e-
mail, for updates on events we plan to hold this season. We will be sending out volunteer requests
on a regular basis for the work that needs to be done throughout the year. The first event will be

We had minimal vandalism issues last year. I think the laminated signs on each of the plot posts
helped keep vandalism to a minimum. We will be posting these signs earlier, (mid June), for the
2011 season. We still think getting to know your neighbours’ makes it easier for you to detect a
stranger at the garden. Just by asking questions you can deter them from thinking about taking
what does not belong to them.
